My K-pop Girl Group Highlights in 2022

Updated: Nov 14, 2022

TWICE

To be honest, when I was first getting into K-pop I couldn’t really get my head around the fact that some groups had so many members. My initial thought was “Oh my god, there’s too many” especially when I saw TWICE (9 members) and LOONA (12 members). What I discovered was that each member plays a role in the group, and it wouldn't be the same without one of them. Once you get used to it, it feels very natural. In the UK and US, groups are typically made up of 4 or 5 people (for example, Little Mix, One Direction) so I think I was surprised by the difference. I've become a fan of TWICE, their music is so fun and upbeat. It's great to work out to because it's so high energy. I loved Talk that Talk, it's so catchy and the choreo is great. Nayeon also made her solo debut this year, with POP! I loved the concept and the styling.

They slayed in this Cosmo shoot. The compositions of the photos were really cool.

LE SSERAFIM

Really impressive fan edit

Anti-ti-ti-ti fragile

LE SSERAFIM are so talented. My fav songs are Antifragile and Fearless. There was a big controversy at the beginning of year where the member Garam got kicked out of the group following bullying accusations.

MAMAMOO

I loooove MAMAMOO. They’re different from a lot of K-pop girl groups in the sense that they don’t feel as pressurised to conform to a lot of the ridiculous beauty standards the industry pushes. Hwasa in particular has spoken out about how she doesn’t fit the standards, and so her goal is to create a new standard. Illela is so catchy. Their vocals are always great. The performance they did of HIP in 2019 is one of the best K-pop performances I've ever seen.

Iconiiiiiiiiiic

BLACKPINK

I briefly discussed Blackpink’s comeback this year in this post. I personally feel that YG put in minimal effort with them because they know fans are going to support them no matter what, and as as a result, the comeback fell a bit flat. The girls have been getting a lot of criticism online about their “lazy” performances on their tour and that they look unprepared. I hope moving forward, they can regain some kind of passion and interest in what they’re doing, whether that be music, or maybe acting in Jisoo and Jennie’s case. I think the criticism has been overly harsh.
